External Wall Insulation

09 May External Wall Insulation

External Wall Insulation

You do not need to try out different techniques to keep your home warm in winter. With external wall insulation you can cover your walls with several protective layers that will enable your walls to stand the severe cold outside and keep your house warmer.

How does it work?

External wall insulation, also commonly known as solid wall insulation, is used to insulate homes that have no cavity walls. These houses are mostly old and have a traditional architecture, including terraces and balconies.

External wall insulation is combined with exterior walls of the house, covered with several protective layers and secured with a decorative finish or rendering process.

It is important to note that cavity wall render differs from that of external wall insulation. External wall insulation is recommended for houses that have no cavity walls, or walls that are too small for cavity insulation. Houses with cavity wall insulation may not be suitable for external wall insulation.

External wall insulation keeps heat from escaping the walls. Unlike cavity and loft insulation, external wall insulation makes use of rigid insulation – made of polystyrene slabs. These expanded polystyrene has numerous air pockets, which makes it a good insulator for the walls. It is simple to cut it into different shapes and sizes, which implies that it can easily fit into any shape or size of the window and door frames.

The insulation slabs are positioned in place using fixing anchors that are drilled into the walls and then the insulation is covered with a reinforcing mortar layer. Afterwards, the walls are concealed with a mesh of glass fibre. As the mesh dries, it gives the insulation the structural strength it requires.

For the final touches, decorative render or primer layers makes the house look as good as new. The insulation adds 9 cm thickness to the wall.
